September 11th, 2001 was a wake-up call for many Americans. At a time
of such great loss, there is also much to gain.
Teach Tolerance. Tolerance.org
is a project of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The website is
a powerful resource for information -- for teachers, parents, and
students -- for fostering compassion, tolerance, and peace. Especially
wonderful is their 101
Tools for Tolerance.
Reject
Discrimination. Arab Americans, Muslims, and South Asians
were among the secondary victims of the attacks on September 11th.
Hate crimes, discrimination, and public hostility were commonplace
in the following weeks. As a result we have a unique opportunity
to educate ourselves and others about Arabs and Arab Americans.
Expand
Your Global Consciousness. The events of September 11th
forced many Americans to look beyond their backyards and borders.
An understanding of America's role on the world stage is essential
to understanding of our foreign relations. Other good resources
include The Nation,
Congress.org,
and other objective media.
