JAKARTA
(Reuters) - Up to 28 people have been killed in landslides
triggered by heavy rain in Indonesia's Central Java province,
the official Antara news agency said on Tuesday. The landslides
struck the districts of Cilacap and Banyumas early on Monday
morning while residents of various villages located in valleys
were sleeping, the agency said.
It
was unclear how many were injured.
Dozens
of homes had been destroyed with some parts of villages covered
in up to 16.4 feet of mud, the agency added. The area is around
220 miles southeast of Jakarta. Rescue and relief efforts were
under way.
