REASONS TO GIVE - IN MAY
  • MOTHER'S DAY - In the U.S., Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe as a day dedicated to peace. Howe -- writer, abolitionist, and woman's suffragist -- would hold organized Mother's Day meetings in Boston every year. (She also wrote the words to the Battle Hymn of the Republic.) Honor the true meaning of Mother's Day by making a donation in the name of your favorite mom. We've even created a special Mother's Day area so you can choose charitable organizations that focus on mothers and make a gift donation. An e-Card is automatically sent to your recipients notifying them of your generous gift.
  • SKIN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH - Did you know that skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States? According to current estimates, 40 to 50 percent of Americans who live to age 65 will have skin cancer at least once. Although anyone can get skin cancer, the risk is greatest for people who have fair skin that freckles easily. Read tips on avoiding skin cancer.
  • MAY 6-12 IS TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK - Did you know that by the time they are nine, students in low-income areas will be three to four grade levels behind their nine-year old peers in higher income areas. In order to create a level playing field, Teach for America encourages recent college graduates to commit two years to teach in urban and rural public schools. Honor these men and women and ALL the committed teachers around the country by making a donation to Teach for America.
  • MAY 31 IS WORLD NO-TOBACCO DAY - Each day, 3,000 kids become regular smokers. One-third of them will die prematurely – from lung cancer, emphysema, heart disease or other tobacco-related illnesses. It’s no mystery why this happens. The tobacco industry spends more than $7 billion each year (more than $18.6 million every day) to advertise and promote its products. The National Center for Tobacco-Free Kids is fighting to free America's youth from tobacco and to create a healthier environment. Help them accomplish this by making a contribution.
