REASONS TO GIVE -- IN FEBRUARY

FEBRUARY 26TH IS "Spay Day USA" -- In the United States, thousands upon thousands of puppies and kittens are born each day because of the uncontrolled breeding of pets. Stray and abandoned animals add thousands more offspring to the population. The result is a huge number of dogs and cats for whom there are no homes. In addition, many people obtain pets without first thinking carefully about the decision. As a result, an estimated 4 to 6 million dogs and cats are euthanized in America's animal shelters each year because they are not wanted by anyone, anywhere. (Read more facts about overpopulation)

  • Is it possible for such a huge problem to be solved? YES!! But only by implementing widespread sterilization programs, only by spaying and neutering all companion animals, will we be able to get a handle on this problem.
  • What Spay Day USA? Spearheaded by the Doris Day Animal Foundation, Spay Day USA is America's first and only national spay/neuter day of action. During Spay Day USA, veterinary clinics, humane organizations, businesses, and concerned citizens all across the country join forces to promote spay/neuter as a responsible, humane method of solving the overpopulation problem. Find out the MANY WAYS you can help.
  • Make a donation to support spay/neuter programs. There are many animal organizations working to eliminate the overpopulation CRISIS, including Doris Day Animal Foundation and Spay/Neuter Animal Network. Find more here or search by keyword.
  • Other ways to promote Spay/Neuter programs. Get an Animal Friendly License Plate (proceeds go to the state's spay/neuter program. Learn about (and BUY when available) the new Spay/Neuter postage stamps the United States Post Office has created!

February is Black History Month -- February was originally chosen for this celebration because of the birthdays of two men who greatly impacted the American black population: Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln.

QUOTE OF THE MONTH

When I was a young man, I wanted to change the world. I found it was difficult to change the world, so I tried to change my nation. When I found I couldn't change the nation, I began to focus on my town. I couldn't change the town and as an older man, I tried to change my family. Now, as an old man, I realize the only thing I can change is myself, and suddenly I realize that if long ago I had changed myself, I could have made an impact on my family. My family and I could have made an impact on our town. Their impact could have changed the nation and I could indeed have changed the world. ~Unknown
