You can make a difference

"Can we end poverty in our day if each of us decides to act? Is it really possible? Every morning as we open our eyes, a new day beckons, full of possibility."

This is an excerpt from the book Our Day to End Poverty, an inspirational book detailing 24 ways you can make a difference. Chapter 8: Giving from the Heart features JustGive's Charity Wedding Registry as a way to Give your Best.

In line with our mission to make charitable giving part of our everyday lives, Our Day to End Poverty was written for those who know there is poverty and suffering in the world and want to know what they can do to help. Across the country people are joining together to reduce hunger and poverty, including shelter and food assistance programs, who are working to help millions in America and abroad.

Help End Hunger
Millions of Americans rely on emergency food sources or go hungry and almost half are children. Efforts to reduce hunger and poverty, including shelter and food assistance programs, are working to help millions in America and abroad.

Support Shelters
Nearly 1 million people are homeless on any given night. Most homeless families who receive needed services like substance abuse treatment, education, and job training stop being homeless. Homelessness is a condition that we have the power to end.

Social networking makes a difference

Project Agape partnered with JustGive to launch the Causes application so that any Facebook user can connect with their network of friends to support the causes they care about. Promoting your cause is increasingly popular across social networking sites and becoming an important way for people to feel they have the power to create change.

Young people are facing greater uncertainty with fears of global warming rising and the instability in the Middle East mounting. Studies confirm that this is a service-oriented generation of young people. For example, more than 83 percent of college freshmen reported in 2004 that they did volunteer work during their last year of high school, up from 66 percent in 1989, according to a study by the Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles. Facebook presents the ideal platform to inspire young people to take control of their future and make a difference in the world.

Another partner, Change.org, also launched on Facebook in addition to their own site which aims to transform social activism by serving as the central platform that connects likeminded people, whatever their interests, and enables them to exchange information, share ideas, and collectively act to address the issues they care about.

Education makes a difference

We all remember the excitement of school shopping for new shoes or a new backpack. Many families in our communities are struggling to afford these necessary school items. As the new school year approaches, teach your children how philanthropy can help a child start the school year with a smile. Our corporate sponsor, Oracle, committed to education, invests in math, science and technology programs, targeting low-income communities and encouraging the gifted innovators of tomorrow.
