Signs of Need

  • 57 million teachers around the world lack basic books and materials.

  • 880 million people in the developing world-1 out of every 5-have no health services

  • 2.2 billion people in the developing world -- 1 out of every 2 -- do not have adequate housing.

  • The world population will reach 9.5 billion by 2050. 8 billion will live in developing countries.

  • 80% of the poor in developing world live in rural areas.

Signs of Hope

Much is being done to meet the basic needs of people around the world:

  • HUNGER: The number of people who die from hunger has decreased by 32% -- but still 24,000 die each day.

  • GOVERNMENT: USAID has helped increase agricultural productivity as well as economic security in sub-Saharan Africa. USAID is also involved in stimulating private sector activities in Africa to bring life into weak economies.

  • DEBT RELIEF: The Heavily Indebted Poor Country Initiative has been endorsed as one effective way to help poor, heavily indebted countries deal with severe poverty. The initiative would require the international community to work together to help poor countries reduce debt to a level that is commensurate with their growth and ability to pay.

Overseas aid involves the most basic human needs that we take for granted: food, sanitation, healthcare, and education. You can support the charities that are making these basic necessities available to everyone.
