Lawyers Committee For Civil Rights Under Law
Washington, DC 20005
Tax ID: 52-0799246
While discrimination based on race, gender, and national origin persists, the Lawyers'' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law has made substantial gains over the past four decades in guaranteeing constitutional protections for Americans in all areas of our society. The Lawyers'' Committee''s representation -- in the courts, as the people''s advocate before government bodies, and in educating the public about crucial civil rights issues--has given hope to millions of Americans and strengthened opportunities for all. The Lawyers'' Committee is a national, non-partisan, non-profit organization. We were formed in 1963 at the request of President John F. Kennedy to marshal the resources of the legal community to address our nation''s pressing civil rights needs. For nearly four decades, the Lawyers'' Committee has worked to rebuild communities, improve educational opportunities for young people, promote fairness in the workplace, foster fair housing and economic opportunities, improve the environmental health of contaminated communities, and foster full participation of all citizens in our nation''s democratic institutions. Leading representatives of the American bar -- including partners at major law firms, general counsel of corporations, law school deans, and individual attorneys -- are integral to both the governance and execution of the Lawyers'' Committee''s work. These bar leaders serve on the Board of Directors and Trustees of the Lawyers'' Committee and provide countless hours of pro bono service as co-counsel in path-breaking civil rights cases. Our accomplishments are realized through the Committee''s network of more than 100 major law firms and thousands of individual lawyers nationwide. When combined with the resources of the eight local, independently financed and governed Lawyers'' Committees -- with their own extensive attorney networks -- we represent the largest civil rights legal formation in the United States. The Lawyers'' Committee''s legacy is intertwined with the landmark victories and accomplishments of the civil rights movement -- from the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 to the Civil Rights Act of 1991 and the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.

That sentiment was the theme of the first conference and continues to serve as the clarion call for the NBWHP membership today. NBWHP opened its first office in Atlanta in 1984. However, in 1996, NBWHP moved its headquarters to Washington, DC, placing the organization in the center of the public policy arena. NBWHP is the premier organization on Black women's health among legislators, health professionals, funders, the media and our beloved membership. Far too many African American and other minority students still lack the financial and other support or the rigorous pre-college education they need to gain admission to and succeed in college. It is to the success, in school and beyond, of these young men and women that UNCF is dedicated, as much today as it was when it was founded.
