New Orleans Jazz is revived

When most of us think about New Orleans, we think about the birthplace of Jazz. As the one year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina approaches, we took a look at how Arts & Culture has survived in New Orleans. One organization, the Tipitina’s Foundation has donated over $500,000 for instruments for local schools in an effort to keep the music tradition of New Orleans alive. This year, Jazz Fest was dedicated to the people of New Orleans and our partner, American Express, joined Shell and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation to ensure the return of the annual festival. Rising youth volunteers

sWhen Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in September 2005, it sparked an outpouring of youth-generated fundraising efforts for the storm victims. Thousands of youth across the nation donated their baby-sitting money, sold lemonade, and held concerts; raising millions of dollars for relief efforts. These young fundraisers, similar to the ones after last year's tsunami and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, represent a generation of youth much more engaged in the community.

Young people today are volunteering at unprecedented rates. Our youth are facing greater uncertainty with fears of global warming rising and the instability in the Middle East mounting. Studies confirm that this is a service-oriented generation of young people. For example, more than 83 percent of college freshmen reported in 2004 that they did volunteer work during their last year of high school, up from 66 percent in 1989, according to a study by the Education Research Institute at the University of California at Los Angeles.
